The place to come for a wild evening Latin American dancing, or at least learning the steps on the tiny dancefloor. This basement nightspot used to be Chicago Meatpackers, one of Bob Peyton's chain of American style eateries, which flourished in the '80s. The grand staircase from the ground level is still in place, and the last time I was here I could still see traces of the miniature railway tracks up near the ceiling. Food is a sideline, mainly putting in an appearance to shore up the relentless party atmosphere, and includes typical spicy treats such as nachos. Most customers come for the dancing, the cocktails and the beer. This venue provided a vibrant hub of activity for the capital's Brazilian football fans during World Cup 98 in France.top of page

Lunch
£15 ($24)
Superbly located on the River Thames opposite the south bank arts complex, this anchored boat suffered from having its excellent views almost completely blocked by the awning of a neighbouring floating restaurant. A few tables and chairs fight for space on the tiny deck, but the main attraction is below deck, where of an evening pumping salsa music attracts a smartly and sexily dressed Latin (mainly Columbian?) crowd who know their dancing. Food is of the region, and includes guacamole, garlic prawns and empanadas starters. Beware of the malevolent, green button-sized chilli peppers lurking in the guacamole - I had an extremely painful experience on one visit.top of page
Prices are per head for two-three courses, sharing a bottle of wine or a beer or two where appropriate
