Interesting cellar location
in touristy Covent Garden. Entrance via an industrial style elevator into
a bustling and noisy underground cavern. The waiters wear monks' habits
and dish out variations on the theme of moules et frites (mussels &
chips to you, mate), served with mayonnaise. The range includes traditional
such as meunière, marinières and provencales, to exotic such
as congo (coconut cream and lemongrass) and snob royale (lobster bisque).
Nice beer including Hoegaarden from a huge list of about 300, but I've
had bigger, tastier moules elsewhere. Other traditional Belgian delights
on offer, such as wild boar sausages, stoemp (mash with swede and cabbage,
I think), bloedpans (black pudding), croquettes, asparagus soup and lamb
shank. Also available are deals such as lunch for a fiver and beat the
clock where what you pay reflects the time that you ordered. On a more
recent visit I enjoyed a very tasty fillet steak with a dark, delicious
sauce and frites. However the noise levels meant I had to shout my order
and conversation was limited. The air conditioning struggles to cope especially
in hot weather. Other branches in Camden, Holland Park, Islington and
now New York. |
