The deli beside this recent
addition to 'Fulham Island' was what attracted me initially to Aziz. Inside
the restaurant deep reds and browns predominate, while tables are roughly
finished wood with a chunky feel, dotted about with decorative Moroccan
lamps. A long bar with plenty of low level seating greets the visitor,
partially screened off from the dining area with large dark wooden frames.
The welcome is warm, if more pan-European than Mediterranean - our Polish
waitress politely answered our questions about some of the dishes. After
aperitifs (Campari or gins and tonic, and a bloody Mary), we started with
dishes of sorkeh panir (grilled marinated cheese £5), rice with
merguez sausage (£4), and spicy beef sausage (£4.50). The
sausages were fairly mild, but we dared each other to spice them up a
bit with some fiery harissa paste. Mechoui (roasted shoulder of lamb,
and I think overpriced at £25 for two sharing) consisted of spiced,
roughly sliced chunks of meat, but offered very little moisture or flavour
to counteract its dryness. Adding side dishes of feebly spiced potatoes
with an unpleasant oily flavour, and plain couscous, which I normally
like a lot, probably didn't help. The others had a lamb kebab and a delicious
lamb tagine, which I tried and wished I'd ordered instead. The wine, a
bottle of Moroccan Domaine Riad Jamil (£23), was excellent. For
dessert the fondant chocolate cake and mint tea ice cream provided a sweet,
cool finish, while the others had Moroccan mint tea. Judging from the
sign outside earlier in the week, belly dancing is occasionally on the
menu along with traditional music. |
